It looks legit to me, but not because 'it belonged to veteran.' Stories are meaningless when trying to figure out authenticity. Again, I am admitting up front that I am not sure about these badges. The patina and color appear genuine.
Even allowing for a variation in casting dies, the waves on the two badges differ considerably. I cannot see the reverse rivet, and this is another point that Japan X (in the linked thread above) claims is important. Japan X also stated that 'Sub geometry, catching hook, ... etc.' are important. Without more specifics, it is hard to be sure. Perhaps he can shed more light on this.
