it do not belong to me But I would like to understand what is written by a shin gunto on a shirosaya.

The sayagaki is by Tanobe Michihiro, whose art name is "Tanzan". If you google his name you'll see some results.


I am *not* proficient in Japanese ... this is a difficult translation for me. Perhaps someone with hands-on experience in this stuff can make corrections for me.

I looked it up. 下浣 is indeed the later part of a month from the day 21st to the 30th. 上浣 is the 1st to the 10th. 中浣 is the 11th to the 20th. They're the same as 上旬、中旬、下旬. They divide the month into 3 parts. Each part is 10 days.

Thank you for the translation. That was the hard work I didn't want to tackle.

That says the smith made both Soshu tradition (相州伝) and Bizen tradition (俑前伝). This sword is made in the Soshu traditon. The writer used word "former" (前者).

The original poster broke the sentence into two parts in the middle. If someone doesn't know the language, better present everything together, instead of cutting it into pieces. Bad, Bad.

It makes reading very hard to the point I didn't want to tackle it.

Well, I'd say the OP was trying to make it easier. (^__^)

Thanks for the kind words ... my brain is still spinning and hurting. And thanks for the other translations. I know about the month being in three parts, but I forgot the "counter" ... and when I looked up the kanji, I couldn't find it -- it came up as "enema." (And, I didn't want to ask "She Who Must Be Obeyed" for fear of her chiding my poor language ability).
