The smith is Masatada. Having the star stamp, it was traditionally made. Nice find.

      Hitachi Masatada

      Hi, Reeder3,

I've looked and looked and looked (via google, of course), but I just can't find anything for Hitachi Masatada. Do you have info on the smith?

      Thanks,

Okay .... had to put on my detective hat.

        Mark Sesno's book, Japanese Swordsmiths A-M; p. 336 says:
Masakatsu (正勝), Called "Hitachi Taro" (常陸太郎) Masatada (正忠), 2nd gen.
But I had to transcribe that because the search result page doesn't open..

So I'm guessing this smith used to be Masakatsu, but he was called "Hitachi Taro Masatada" .... and this blade is signed as Hitachi Masatada.

        常陸正忠

I hope a sword expert can clear this up for us.

        Cheers,
        --Guy
