Army code meaning 暁294

Found a 暁二九四 部隊長 (platoon commander) inscription on a Great East Asia War (1942-5 era) cup. Does anyone know the 暁 (akazuki) code?

PS The number might be 2940 since there is a small circle after the kanji numbers.

Ship Headquarters (out of Hiroshima)
