    Entrenching tool-any chance?

This one is driving me crazy, the cover seems from what I can find online to be Japanese ww2 but the shovel, particularly the blade, does not match observed Japanese ww2 ones that I find online. So, the question I pose is this: is this in fact a Japanese shovel? if not then what country used this pattern? the only marking is what looks like a 'G' on the section that slides over the wood handle. Thank you for any assistance, sorting through a lot of items with some repro stuff mixed in.
    Thank you,
    Eric

I assume wood handle comes off? Is there a hole drilled through handle? All I've seen had a hole. There would be a length of coarse twine/rope that would help keep both handle & metal together. Another thing I see wrong is shovels usually had two holes. Yours seems to have only one. The cover is also different to the others I've seen. To confuse matters further I believe there were at least three army shovel variations. One that had a permanently attached handle & was called an engineer model. Also found attached to sides of trucks

The cover looks different to others I've seen, hopefully others may recognise it.

This looks like the smaller early shovel with only one hole in the metal. But the neck of the shovel looks smaller, others I've seen have a longer metal neck. This smaller shovel had a cover with leather straps and buckles.

The slightly larger shovel had two small holes in it that could be looked through and the larger hole like this one. The cover for that one had ties similar to this but the consteuction is different to the one shown here.

I can see a hole in the wooden handle for the rope so I think it could be Japanese.

          Regards

          Russ

Thank you to both of you and yes there is a hole in the wood handle and yes it does slide out of the metal pilot hole. Leave the rust or oil?
It's also an item that I would offer for sale, I know we all hate it when people ask for prices but I literally have no idea what to ask for it.
            Thanks again,
            Eric
