    Japanese artillery shell?

Just came across this interesting artillery shell - with the combination of characters and the source, I'm thinking japanese?

I see marking "DES" and "12/17" with 2 japanese characters

Inside of the head has threads...do they even go together?

    Here's the headstamp

PS - I see a stamping on the side of the 'head' marked 'IX (with character)

Please provide dimensions of shell opening and shell height. Also casing height alone and when the two are assembled

Looks like an anchor symbol, much like those used on IJN equipment.

Shell height is 15 cm - shell diameter at opening is about 4 cm.

Head is about 13 cm tall and about 4 cm diameter.

              Hi Paul,

Looking at it with a loup, you are correct, there is an anchor there as part of that symbol.

The anchor with two "wavy" lines is for the Kure Arsenal.
                The white color indicates AP.

Looks like the 12/17 is showa date Dec 1942.
