Im framing my father in laws flag (that his father brought back) but I need to know which way is up?..

Id feel pretty foolish if I had it framed upside-down..

picture #2, that is the correct orientation.

Are you going to need to somehow stabilize that long tear before framing?

It would be great to see some pics. of the finished framing once completed.

First I've seen with hand prints.

Interesting flag and the first I have seen with hand prints.

Thinking it may have been his children.

          Regards Graham.

Totally agree. I've seen a lot of these over the years, many with extraordinary embellishments, and have never seen that.

To the OP : nice flag, and kudos to you for framing it for your FIL. As I'm sure you are aware, archival materials, including glass with full-spectrum UV protection is in order. These flags retain such good color and writing as most have spent the last 70+ years in a box / drawer. I've seen several of these that were not framed correctly, and the writing and color suffered for it. One was in a $20 poster frame. . Great for a modern Marshall Tucker Band poster; not so for a historical artifact.

If you want to stablise the flag/make it last long, you may way to lightly sewn the back of it onto linen. I believe Jeff Bridges does this and do museums for textiles. http://www.jeffbridgman.com/inventor...ge=out&id=2740

If you go to Japan Ref forum, they may be able to help you translate it: https://www.jref.com/forum/good-luck...militaria.206/

His children may still be alive. If you'd like to return the flag to his family, you can contact Obon Society: http://obonsociety.org/
