    Japanese CAP Help

    Hi guys,

Recently I got this Japanese WWII Hat. It is my very first so I am trying to learn as much as possible about it. Can anyone help me out?

Thank in advance for the help!

I hate to say this but I have doubts about your cap.

The headband is normally pig skin leather, faux leather and sometimes rubberized material on later caps.

The wool body of the cap is normally of such high rag content moth don't bother with it but the yellow stars are chewed to crap. The stars have a thin paper backing that often shows less mothing than the wool star itself.

It lacks a muslin liner which would show inspection and depot stamps.

Does it appear to have had a chin strap?

Those things concern me but I'd be interested to see other opinions.

        Best, Rod

          Hi Rod,

I appreciate your opinion! As far the chinstrap, none came with this hat. It did come in a larger grouping out of an estate though, so I am surprised to hear it doesnt look right. I know the other items it came with are good.

As far as caps go, I know very little. But it is very good to know that these caps shouldnt have moth bites.

          Thanks again!

You're welcome. I hate bursting bubbles but it's better than being mislead by "fake news".

Pre-1939 caps were wool felt and the moth love them. It's the later ones that they avoid. No way to know the caps history. May be a child's toy or stage prop if it's a period piece or an early attempt to fake a cap. It's anyone's guess.

Happy to hear you did well with the rest of the grouping!
