    Hinomaru Yosegaki flag Shrine Stamps

While I await the arrival of Dr. Bortner's book by snail mail, I have a question about shrine stamps on Hinomaru Yosegaki flags.

Was there any preferred or traditional location for placing the stamps on flags?
I've only seen pictures of one flag with stamps.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi,

The answer is: absolutly ! It's the white part of the flag !
I have seen them on the top or lower corner.

Mike's book is awesome, when I open it the time always seems to stop. You won't regret it !

    Cheers,
    Mat.

        Shrine stamps

        Hello Tim and Mat-
Thank you for the kind comments with regard to the book. An interesting study could be done on Shrine and Temple seals alone. The subject gets even more fascinating when they are combined with personal seals and those of other organizations. Regards,

          Shrine Stamps

I was looking at the Obon Society's site the other daY. They had a picture of a flag covered with stamps. It was something to see. Right column row 15, here is a link to their gallery. http://obonsociety.org/yosegaki-hinomaru-gallery/

Hi Mike, you're very welcome, thanks for your book ! M'y interest un theese flags grew a lot thanks to you.

Tim > Seems like a few stamps are printed several times. I suppose they got it blessed the more they could. I have a hachimaki full of temple stamps, each are different. I suppose someone made quite a long pilgrimage to got it blessed on so many temple. It also have the "Ki buun cho kyu" slogan.

If you want to see it just let me know I would be glad to share some pics.

            Cheers,
            Mat.

                    Buddhist Sutras are TOUGH!

This is a souvenir tenugui [handcloth] from making a pilgramage of 33 temples dedicated to Kanzeon (Kannon/Kuan Yin/Kwan Yin). English Wiki
The Bandō Sanjūsankasho (坂東三十三箇所) ("The Bandō 33 Kannon Pilgrimage") is a series of 33 Buddhist temples in Eastern Japan sacred to Goddess Kannon. Bandō is the old name for what is now the Kantō region,[1] used in this case because the temples are all in the Prefectures of Kanagawa, Saitama, Tokyo, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Chiba. As is the case with all such circuits, each location has a rank, and pilgrims believe that visiting them all in order is an act of great religious merit.
The wiki page also provides links to all 33 temples

Most of the stamps tell which station it was: Bando #11; Bando #2, etc., very similar to getting your walking stick branded when you stop at each station on the Mt. Fuji Climb.

                    From the right side:

                    観音守護
                    Kan'non shugo [Kwan Yin Protects]

                    兜下
                    Kabuto sh!ta or Kabuto-sage
Below the helmet/ or helmet cord

                    武運
                    長久

                    Bu'un Chōkyū
