    Japanese or not

    Hi
I bought this item as a ww2 Japanese officers cap about a year ago but have never been 100% sure of it. Any help appreciated.

The poster is too small .... but I think your hat is for a captain; it's either a #5 (captain) or #7 (Lt. Col) on the chart below:

Okay, I just expanded the chart. I'm pretty certain that your hat is a #7, Captain.

                Colonels?

                Thanks Guys
The guy I got it from thought it was Colonel in The a Japanese Navy which I thought was strange. However be obliged if someone knows if the Japanese Navy had Colonels

Yes, they were called "Navy Colonel" e.g., Kaigun Dai-Sa 海軍大佐. For some reason the IJN pronounces 大 (Tai) as "Dai" (dai-i, dai-sa) for ranks ... except for full admiral; that is still "Tai-sho".
