Chief Petty Officer 3rd class patch

I found this at the swap meet today. Is the pin real and what does the white mum stand for, I have seen different colors on line. Does anyone have any idea on what is written on the back?

It says Tsushima (對島, in modern kanji 対馬).

Most often used for the famous island between Japan and S Korea, but most likely a family name here.

Thank you for the fast reply. Do you have any idea why someone would write their name on the back of a patch that would be sewn on? Or what the difference between a white versus green mum denotes?

I have seen several others with written names on the back of Navy rank patches. Very nice original example

Thanks! Any idea why they did that?

These patches were tack stitched on the sleeves and could easily have been ripped off during laundering (just my guess) but can't tell if yours was ever used or not...could have been an extra one or one when he makes rank and just added his name to it and presented to him, again just my guess.

I agree with David. I see no stitch holes or evidence this was ever applied

Interesting, It just struck me as an odd thing to do.
