      Flag sword combo

      Hello Forum Members,
Does anyone know what the proper name is for one of these.
It is made for a flag, and as you see has the correct scabbard to go with it.
The name for it just escapes me.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

On the contrary, I don't think you will find a Doubting Thomas in the group. These can go for buku bucks online when found. It is on the cover of Dawson's sword book, maybe he has a name for it in there. Cool item.

I'm traveling home today, and don't have my Dawson with me. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll look it up tomorrow and update this. That's pretty cool to see a "live" one as opposed to just a book picture!

I once had one in naval form come in on a motel buy years ago. That was the only one I ever encountered.

                    Dawson just calls them "flag-swords" (p. 72)

"Of the five examples known to the author, four are company grade kyu-gunto dress swords and one is a police sword."

                      Sword Flag

I have one of these as well. There was a time when they were never seen. Over the last couple of years, a number of them have been offered on eBay in various conditions. You generally see them with either the metal scabbard or the sword "blade" itself in poor condition. In addition, the flag is often missing or has been replaced with a Japanese national flag. Based upon Dawson's example, I would guess that they were meant to display the battle flag only, although this could be incorrect. The flag simply wraps around the blade and then stows into the scabbard. Bob Chatt offered one of these on his site a while back. I am not sure if it is there or if it has sold.
