    You are correct in thinking this is from a Type 98 officer shingunto. This one is made for a combat saya (wood scabbard wrapped with leather). The large hole on the side is for a leather retaining strap that snaps to the saya cover.

            I see what you mean CED. The same unfinished stuff is inside the retention strap hole.

            You have 2 options: 1. Pretty well made fake - they usually don't get the lines around the edges nor the 3 flower pistols in each petal done properly, or 2. It's an unfinished, poorly made Tsubasa, either by an uninspected maker, or a late war rush job.

            I'd lean to choice 2.

                It looks poorly made. Fake or not regardless. Even it's not a fake, I won't be happy with it on my sword.

                  That is often found on the lower grade, but authentic, military tsuba. I have no concerns with the authenticity.
