Question about star

Hi guys
I saw in the past some original Japanese helmets. the star in front of the helmet had no (more) paint but the shell of the helmet has stil a lot of paint or was even never used. How is this possible? Maybe they used prepainted stars and the metal of the painted star reacts different than the painted shell during aging?

A few scenarios come to mind. Insignia stuck out & was subject to wear perhaps from a helmet cover. It could of had paint removed by G.I. to make it more jazzy or star could be a replacement
