    Toyama Military Academy

I have an interest in the Toyama Military Academy because I have studied the sword system taught there (Toyama Ryu). My teacher learned from Taizaburo Nakamura; then when I lived in Japan, I studied directly under Nakamura sensei. Years later I found out that my father-in-law also attended the Toyama Academy.

The academy taught officers and NCOs in physical training, maneuvers, etc. The academy also housed the Army Music School. In addition to the physical training, they had courses in bayonet fencing and swordsmanship -- both single-handed and double-handed, and mounted fencing.

I have begun to collect the sake cups (sakazuki), warmer bottles (tokkuri), and anything else that might have the Toyama Military Academy name attached to it. So far I have a small collection .... I would have more, but don't have the deep-pockets that many "snipers" have, and I lose out. But that's the nature of the game and I enjoy every piece I can find.

I have recently acquired a beautiful cup named to "Yamamoto" (thanks Rich Catalano!). By coincidence, I also have a very nice bottle named to "Yamamoto", so they will pair up nicely. Yamamoto is a very common name, and I am certain these two pieces are not en suite ... but they look nice. I'll start off first with those two.

    My modest collection:

Both of thes pieces are named to Yamamoto.

A nice lacquer sakazuki given to me by my best friend, Nyle Monday.

Another tokkuri, but in pretty poor condition.

These are not part of my collection, but I'm keeping my eyes open.

      Hello Guy,

      Great thread. Thanks for showing.

Can you point out the Toyama Ryu reference kanji for us?

If I have any amongst my cups I'll send them your way.

      Regards,
      Stu

          Guy-
Thank you for posting your collection. I enjoyed the award medal/fob piece as well. The kabuto makes for a nice accent, whether it is portrayed on a cup or is used as artwork on a flag or something else. I have to be honest but I have tried to stay away from cups because of the addiction factor. There are so many different ways that you can collect them and they are so colorful that they make for most addicting collector's item! Thank you again for posting.

              Tom,

Thanks, no, I've not seen this site before. I followed his feedback link and see he is marshaln whom I've corresponded with on ebay. Very nice correspondence -- he was very friendly and knowledgeable. There are a couple of Infantry Academy cups, but no Toyama Academy. I'll keep my eye on this site.

              Many thanks,

                Guy,

Thank you for sharing your interest in and connection to the Toyama Ryu academy. I sense a passion which will bring you much more than the deepest pockets could ever satisfy.
Your best friend will be proud of the joy he has given you - it is not what we have in life but who we have in our life that matters.

                Regards,

                Kevin.

Well, it looks like my photo-host has begun to ransom photos, and I refuse to pay. So, allow me to upload the images again.

Cups *not* in my collection. The first one is coming to me ... but I haven't been sent the bill yet.
