Here are photos of the markings on a WWII Japanese aircraft machinegun (Type 97) that I recently purchased. I do not yet have possession of the gun, as I am waiting on the federal BATFE approval process to be completed.
I assume that the "97" portion of the markings refers to the model designation of the gun. Likewise, the "6579" portion of the markings is the gun's serial number (at least, that is the number that has been used in BATFE's records as the gun's serial number).
What I am really curious about is the "18" and related markings. Is "18" the year of production, i.e. 1943? What do the other symbols/markings mean?
I would be most grateful for any assistance in deciphering these markings.
Thanks!
Alan
