Ok, I'll kick off with what I'm seeing...first, the tsuba is rather nice. Saotome Tembo Tsuba
The Tembo style of using 'hot stamps' (Kokuin) was a Saotome original style used by Hoan, Heianjo, and Shoami schools. Probably Mid Edo period.

The vajra hilted Ken menuki are also nice quality and probably Edo.

I see the saya combat cover is black and may well be connected to a Naval officer?

As to the blade, all I can say is that the colour of the nakago rust suggests some age and your suggestion of Edo period may be in the right ball-park. The photos aren't too good but it looks like it was once a nice sword and is worthy of professional restoration.

I think Beater has given you some good advice. The poor condition of the blade makes any form of positive identification possible. It certainly is not older than Edo period. The straightness of the blade hints it may be from the Kanbun Period(1661-1673). This shape was very popular in that period. However, shape alone is only one aspect in judging this blade.
