Here is a pair of captured flags that were brought home from the Battle of Okinawa by a member of the 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, known as the "Cannon Cockers". In March 1945, the 11th Marines left for Okinawa, its final combat operation of World War II. There the regiment played an important defensive role with effective counter-battery fire, and steadily suppressed enemy attempts to counter-attack objectives already won by U.S. forces. An interesting signature on the regimental trophy flag, is that of Yazzie Greymountain, a Navajo codetalker assigned to the unit. The flag has the dates of the battle of Okinawa written upon it as well as what appears to be a Howitzer. These flags were taken as trophies from the battle of Okinawa and were brought home to California together. They were framed together and will remain together as long as I own them. Enjoy.
