Hi, This tunic dated 1943 and is marked as a Type 3 tunic looks to have been tailored and modified for civilian wear. It is possible that it was old stock converted to Civilian wear because I cannot see where the top pockets were ever made and there is no evidence that the belt hanger was attached on the left side.

        Thank you for your reply.

The buttons are not military ?

I found this jacket in the same genre:

You think about a military jacket modified civilian?

You think of the civil defense or the militia ?

During the 1930’s and throughout WWII most Japanese civilians (workers, students, veterans, government officials at all levels) wore various garments that were similar to military uniforms or they re-purposed military uniforms for civilian or para-military use. Further, after the war ended of course the Japanese economy was in total ruin, so one finds all manner of creative civilian use of former war materials.

Buttons like the ones on the tunic you posted are not standard military but have been seen on tunics attributed to military schools and other student uniforms. The lack of the top pockets, the use of various types of non-standard military buttons, the design of the lower pockets, and the fact that there is no belt hanger all show that this tunic is for a student or other civilian wear. The features of the posted tunic do not conform to any army tunic issued to the military.

The referenced tunic at griffen is the earlier Type 5 tunic. That tunic also appears to be modified by having the belt hanger removed and a modified collar. Period photographs show this was typical for veterans to do.

In My opinion the ebay tunic is for a student or civilian wear. I hope this helps use the search terms: "Type 98", "Type 5", and "Type 3" to see the correct design of the various military uniforms.

              Best regards,
              Zach

I also thought a paramilitary uniform, or student.

                Another question:

You have an idea of the price of my jacket ?

Sorry I have not followed prices on jackets such as these. I do know that prices on most all Japanese Uniforms have come down a great deal in the last couple of years.

Personally I think a military school. The jacket has the prescribed marking of a military jacket inside ( Regulatory marking the Japanese government for the period 1930-1945 ).

Civilians buttons are referred to as belonging to a school. (See last ebay link)

I think the last button with the six-pointed star and the laurel to identify specialty or type of school.

What do you think? You know the last button ?

This jacket was purchased directly to a Japanese vendor.
The size of the jacket is medium / small.

Here are more photos of the back buttons.

                        The last button is different.

Here is an example of uniform worn by schoolchildren.

although we recognize the model of the jacket on some students.

                          Showa period.
