For the uninitiated .... gimei [gheee-may] 偽名 translates to pseudonym, assumed name, alias (false name). In other words: "faked signature".

      Nickn, thanks for the laugh!

I was puzzled by the unique way the same is wrapped around the tsuka, but then there is one at this posting (http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=844905) wrapped the identical way, and it's a very old sword.

That's a "full wrap" which makes the handle much stronger; the "normal" panels are merely cosmetic.

          Tanzaku (Channelled)

This style is used only for cheap swords. It is small meaning to use ray skin. Sometimes there is a line on the reverse side to trick it for Marugise. Usually it is made of the second pieces of ray skin.

[ghp: sometimes made to look like a full-wrap with one panel split lengthwise.]

          Maru-gise (Round wrapped)
It is common on good quality swords. Usually the joint is at the centre of reverse side. Sometimes it can be placed near the back or near the cutting edge.

Nice Web page from where I borrowed the images.

                Sword

I bought the sword but can't upload any more pictures, computer says a security cookie problem. Any ideas on how to fix? I PM the Mod.

                Thanks

Larry, I've been thoroughly enjoying my recently acquired Fuller & Gregory book, and he has some pics that made me think of your sword. The Kabuto-gane (end-cap on handle) is identical to one of his pics. The leather wrap looks like one of the civilian katanas pressed into military service. There are enough varieties of these that I think it is quite possible yours fit this category.
