    Japanese sword

I have just two pics of this sword and will have some more when I see this in person. I need to know what type it is and a value. It was supposed to be a bring back.

    Thanks

mpkills - be nice to have a name to call you!

It is not a war sword (gunto), and I'm no expert on older swords. Have you taken the handle (tsuka) off to see if it is signed and/or dated?

I have seen "bring back" swords that were personal/family swords that guys got ahold of.

I am going to see this in person tomorrow. How do you take the handle off, I assume it has a screw or screws??

You need to push the bamboo from the side thats not visible. Please be careful.
The peg is visible in the first photo.

                      sword

I took he handle off and no Japanese writing at all observed. There was some kind of charm, symbol, under the silk wrap. The blade appeared to have been polished. The scabbard was wood with the pebble grain wrap around it. The scabbard had a black tied string around the end of it. Still trying to figure out this is. I could have purchased for $350 but still not sure what it is

                          sword

Since no Japanese writing on the blade would this be an officer issued machined sword during WW2 or what? Is the scabbard military issued or what?

no signature really means nothing as far as it being authentic.
its an odd duck but, for 350.00 its worth that in parts alone if real.

The guard, collar, and handle fittings are not military, yet the scabbard has a bit of leather "field scabbard" attached. It might have been an older civilian sword pressed into military service.

We can't really tell much since we have not seen the tang -- even without signature -- the experts can get a feel for the style/age based on file marks, shape of the tang-butt, if it has more than two security holes, etc.
