    Russo-Japanese War Souvenir ?

    Well, that's what I'm assuming.

    A squared-off shell casing, 9 1/4 inches high.

Here's another one at the Guild.

"Single artillery shell casing from Taisho era with wooden box with inscription in Japanese on both the lid of the box with date as well as striking Japanese kanji on the shell itself. The shell casing top has been folded in artistically to create a vase. The kanji is done in red paint. The accompanying wooden box is in very good shape but shows wear. The shell has a 12.5cm bottom diameter and is 28cm in height."

      Regards

        無窮
        Modern Japanese: 無窮
        Tenjōmukyū
As eternal as heaven and earth
[I also saw the translation "Mayest thou live for ever"]

        昭和戊辰之冬
        Showa Tsuchinoetatsu no Fuyu
        Winter, 1928

[Note: Tsuchinoetatsu is alternatively pronounced Boshin; I do not know which pronunciation is correct for this usage. The date employs a combination of Showa era + Zodiac date = 1928.]

        陸軍大臣白川義則書
        Rikugun Daijin Shirakawa Yoshinori-sho
        Army Minister Yoshinori Shirakawa’s writing

Shirakawa was Minister of War from 1927-1929

        Casing stamp:

        安河
        Yasukawa

        明四
        Mei[ji] 4; 1871

I found the same/similar casing on a Japanese auction site.

Goods from an old family of Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture.

        Height 236mm, diameter 92mm
