    Japanese banner translation

    Hello everyone,
Can anyone tell me whats written on this banner. I could not find the two main characters in the translation thread. I know there are a lot of signatures and sayings. I am trying to get an idea if this is a war time piece or a post war fantasy mock up. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

I'm on an iPhone right and cannot do much. This looks like a tenugui tea towel with the word "Kaigun" printed between the meatball.

        海軍
        Kaigun
        Navy

Okay .... back home on the computer.

The maxim over the top of the meatball says:

          敵国降伏
          Tekikoku Kōfuku
          Enemy Countries Capitulation

          The tenugui belonged to:

          室伏君
          Murofushi-kun
          Mr. Murofushi

Thanks Guy! I was wondering if it was a Tenegui. Its a common size for one. I now see that the bold printing as well as the meat ball are pre printed. I was thinking it was hand done along with the other writings. I have not seen one like this before.
            Thanks,

There is a poem on the bottom -- below the pre-printed kanji, punning the recipient's name, 室伏:

              ゆめ勿れ
              Yume muro ni fusu nakare
[You] must not lie down in the dream-chamber

              須く皇国生きる
              Subekaraku Kōkoku ikiru
By all means live for the Empire.

The red seal is read from top-bottom, right-left:

              神山
              社城

              山城神社
              Yamashiro Jinja
              Yamashiro [Shinto] Shrine

There seems to be a Yamashiro Shrine in Shikoku and in Okinawa. Perhaps there are others.

                Hi Paul,

Glad to help when I can. The far right margin is the attribution:

                室伏君の壯行を祝す

                Murofushi-kun no sōkō o shukusu
                Send-off Congratulations to Mr. Murofushi

It is without much doubt a wartime item. His friends liked puns. There is one that says, "I hear that White Flag is the rice brand to buy", which has the double meaning of " A white flag suits America best"

Thanks Nick, thats very interesting as well. The sense of humor shown with puns and a play on the recipients name, make its more fascinating to me. Thanks for your time Nick!

I was able to add this nice Tenegui to my collection, along with a nice flag. These were purchased from the Marine vets son here in California. Thanks to all for the help,
