Help Genuine Wakizashi ?

I picked up these 2x blades yesterday from a man clearing his fathers sheds, I paid £10 for the two and I presumed they were old reproductions items. Having looked more closely this evening, they appear to have some age, the tsuka have been badly covered in leather and of course the blades have light surface rust (the rust looks redder in the photo than it is), the saya appear to be well made but suffering from poor storage.
So can anyone tell me if they are reproductions or possibly the real thing ?
It rare to find anything like this in the UK !

Although they appear tampered with there is a good chance that there are at least some original components,await comments by the more knowledgeable members and resist trying to disassemble the pieces until the experts can advise. Regards, Geoff

Thankyou for the replies, so do I try to gently remove the leather wrap from the handle ? I'd be interested to know what the tang might look like.
