IJA Officer's Snack Tin? - Translation Request

I would be very greatful if anyone could be kind enough to translate this text for me.

I'm lead to believe that this is an Officer's mess tin especially for vegetables etc.

    Many thanks,
    Robert

    G'day Robert,
A very interesting item I haven't seen before. Besides the kanji in read all really says is a description of the item.

    将校用副食容器。
    Officer's side dish container.

    正規の装備ではないが、将校が副食入れとして多用した容器。蓋の定金具があり蓋の内側にはゴム 製 パッキングがある。
(paraphrasing) Although not regular equipment, officers frequently used this as a side dish container. The inside of the lid there is a rubber seal/packing and a continuous bracket on the lid

After googling it, I did find a number of ended yahoo auctions and most of those refer to them as "greens lunch box" lol, So I suppose they could be for vegetables.

    Best regards

    Matt

      Thanks Matt for your help.

I enjoy looking for items such as this which is quite often overlooked while everybody is scrambling for the must have helmets, boots etc.

The tin isn't all that large and is only 10cm in diameter and 2.5cm deep.

      Cheers,
      Robert

PS My 13 year old son is off to Japan on a two week school trip at the end of next week. He will also be staying with a family in Ibaraki for a week. I'm kinda hoping that he gets the Japan bug.

        Robert,
Agreed, it's the little bits that are often overlooked that I like too. Personal items, items dealing with death and religion and flags. I love the old Yosegaki Hinomaru. Uniforms are my other favorite area. I don;t know why though. haha

Your son is very lucky. I bet he will have a blast. Nothing like cultural immersion to find one's love of the subject. I hope at least one of my two girls catch the collecting bug. I hope. haha

I hope his home-stay family are okay. Ibaraki Prefecture has been hit by severe flooding due to the recent taiphoon. It's been in Japanese news the past two days.
