Translation, Japanese on Us Shirt ?

Hello, can anybody say if it's Japanese ? And if yes, what is the name ? It's on a Us ww2 shirt collar, maybe 442e Regimental Combat Team "Nisei" ? This shirt was find in the Vosges. Thank you for help.

    My humble attempt:
left side top = shi - work
left side bottom = jo - above
shijo - work upper, work shirt (right side number) 17

Close, good try. "Above" also has the same nuance as "up" in "hurry up". Work is up or finished up. It also means surface finish. The number to the right I read as 97. What all that means in this context is puzzling, but looks like something done at the cleaners.

Thanks Nick, that's encouraging. I'm learning something.

I see 97 now that you've pointed it out, thought those might be superfluous stitches initially but of course they're not.

        If it's a cleaner/laundry maybe #97 rush order (I.e.; work hurry up)?
