    Real or fake Hinomaru Yosegaki?

    Hello,
until today i collect only us army nam era stuff, but some days ago i found something nice from the Japan Army.

Well, it was an german auction, ive got the flag for 66 Euros (nearly the same in dollars).

The seller give an guarantee, but i think its an fake one.

    Description from the seller:

Original WWII japanese Hinomaru Yosegaki Good Luck Flag. Nice Kanji writings and three Temple Stamps made from heavy Silk! A VERY VERY RARE Item !!!!!!!!!!! I give Lifetime Guaranty for all my items, 100% WWII. I sell a great Collection from japanese WWII items

So, i don´t have any idea if its an real or fake one..

If it´s an fake souvenir flag, is the price ok?

    Many thanks in advance, David

It is a fake 'Tojo flag.' Search this forum for more info, but see here first:

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't pay anything more than $20 for it--and probably not even that high.

Rich ... it's the weekend over here -- maybe the original poster is with family?

Anyway, ...... I understand your feelings.

        Cheers,

P.S. To the poster: we've discussed this type of "Tojo" flag before. That's a forgery of Tojo's signature at the bottom right corner. Link

Classic Tojo flag pattern. There are often stamped twice with the same stamp in the upper corners. Don't really know about their prise. Y ou paid less than the price of an original Hinomaru Yosegaki so it's not too bad. I never really think about buying one of theese but don't think I'll put more than 40 euros as they are still fairly common and almost all the same.

            Thanks alot guys

Read alot now, but don´t know what i have now.

It´s an WWII fake made for soldiers (seabee made), or just an simple after war fake?

I'll vote for ww2 seabee made. But when il was made and sold I am effraid we will never know. I believe souvenir business continued during the occupation of Japan.

If you want to return the flag to the seller you have enough tout do so, as it's not an original hinomaru yosegaki, but an original US look alike. There are not 3 differents stamps but two, because it's two time the same in the upper corners. And finally it's not rare either. So you may want to use the lifetime guarantie as the description was wrong.

You could also keep it as it was rather cheap and still has a historical background, as an interesting testimony of the ww2 souvenir fever and proof of the seabees business genius.

I have a handful of names of helpful people like you in mind but I think others will recognize themselves.

                  Thanx alot guys

Well the flag was in the mail today. It looks and smell very old, it´s not white, more an ivory or dirty white.

Can someone translate all the Kanjis and the stamps? Would be very nice

                  Best regards, David

They are fake flags made by Americans, so a lot of what is written is nonsense and only looks Japanese, which is impossible to translate. Hideki Tojo's fake signature is on the right edge beside incorrect nonsense that is trying to say the 32nd Infantry Regiment.

For some reason, I really dig these flags. Just a great piece of GI/Occupation history that, imo, should be a part of any flag collection. I am sure a lot of folks would poo poo such a specimen being in their collection, but it does give a glimpse into the ingenuity of the Allied soldier (particularly when candy bars and ice cream were available by gullible sailors) during the war. I have said it before, but I believe that these will come into their own one day.

                        Yeah,
it´s an very interesting story about the seabees flag shop, a little bit funny and off course clever.

My flag was cheap imho, and i like it.

                        Very nice forum btw

                        Best regards, David
