Here's a nice, salty, combat carried officer's shin gunto, just in today and out of the estate of a Pacific war veteran. The tang has Kanji on both sides, and I honestly must admit the blade on this thing is as sharp as a razor, even after all these years. Standard field grade mounts, and a killer, old worn patina throughout, but I'd love to know if there's any significance or age to this blade. Thanks in advance for any help. A few pix below. ...

Showa 18th year, 8th month ... 1943 August ... or so it appears on my iPad.
Standard Type 98 mounts with Company Grade Officer tassel.

There appears to be a small stamping on the nakago several inches above the date. Probably a Showa stamp. Have a look here ... half way down the page on the right side.
