Wrist Compass - Are the markings Japanese?

This is in a group of items brought home by an 11th Airborne vet.

I am woefully uninformed as to being able to distinguish Japanese from Chinese or other Asian languages.

Please take a look and let me know what you think. (And if this is indeed a "wrist compass" at all!)

It is a war time compass from Japan, but going by the "Patriot" marking on the back, I believe it is a civilian model.

Thank you Sir! This vet saw combat as well as occupation duty, so I suppose it could have been acquired just about anywhere...but I'm glad to know it is from the period and not modern.

Patriotism [i.e. "Love of Country"]
