Thanks Nick, that is how I read your comment but wanted to make sure we were on the same page with the term before commenting further. What makes you think it's water quenched? I'm not able to determine that from the photos. I'll be the first to admit that my eyes are not as sharp as they once were but if you can point me in the correct direction I'll take another look.

      Thanks,
      Stu

The hamon looks water quenched and I can see activity within which you don't get with an oil quenched blade

          Thanks Nick.

OK, back to jiro90 and the value question.

I cannot see the activity mentioned by Nick so remain uncertain that this blade is a gendaito as defined in the context mentioned above. I'm not saying Nick is incorrect and that it's a Showato, just that I can't yet call it gendaito. I'm hopeful that Bob Coleman or Brian Robinson might offer an opinion in that regard.

As to value. Given the condition I believe the sword would have a retail value of about 1K USD in the North American market if determined to be a Showato and perhaps double that if it's a Gendaito as we are using the term.

For anyone reading this thread and perhaps puzzled about how the term Gendaito is being used have a look here ...

Hi Nick, I agree ... but added that link for any people who might be wondering. I too think traditionally forged and water quenched when using the term gendaito but those who are interested in swords from a militaria only perspective might not.

I'll have another look at the photo you referenced in your other post. Thanks.

                Regards,
                Stu

Pure gut feel is that it is Gendaito as opposed to Showato.
Nicely finished nakago with yasurime, well signed and with the familiy mon. Plus his blades have papered before, and the use of kitae instead of just saku. No guarantees, and I could easily be wrong. But it shouldn't be hard to look closely at the hamon for signs of nie and hada.
                    Worth having checked out.
