Too bad. Such stories lose all credibility for me when they can't even get the commander's name right.
This magazine article from 1933 shows a photo of their return to Tokyo station on June 24th, literally as skulls and bones.

Interesting how this unit broke the so called rules regarding , individuality, uniformity & regulations

Quite to the contrary, they are not individualistic, but very uniform as a group, which is the whole point. Just like those who surrendered to the Russians with white lines on the helmet or the Giretsu camo, a unit approved legitimized ID.

Perhaps but compared to other overall divisions....Wondering how far in advance those Giretsu units we given permission to camo their tunics ,who authorized and at what level? Regarding white stripes on helmets you never commented on the photo of lead soldier or officer with white stripe around helmet. http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...+helmet&page=3 post number 35

Yah .... to the untutored ear, Ikagami [sic] sounds the same as Ikegami (^__^)

Very interesting story and discussion, thanks Jareth and all!

Amazing that a company sized unit attracted so much attention. It's too bad the blog post is thin on historic substance, I'd like to hear more.

Actually it should have been 2nd Lt Ikegami, not 1st Lt Ikagami. He only got promoted at death.

Thanks Nick. He must have been a butt-kicker of a 2LT!

Archive accounts say he continued to wield his sword though shot multiple times and had 5 bullets in his body when he took his last breath. They have detailed witness accounts of how each died. Made me remember the Maginificent Seven movie or the Alamo.
