Wrong knot . If the barrel has red zigzag thread its a navy knot or plain gold for army/civil , but sure not meant for the NCO shingunto.
It has to be made of leather.

And its not the same sword You showed in the first photo , look tsuba.

                    Hi Gary and thank you
I like the sword as it is, I don't intend even giving it a wipe with a duster, that said should I leave the grease on the blade?
                    Regards
                    Frank

                      Hi Frank,

Type 95 are fully machine made so I recommend giving it a good wipe down with a soft cotton rag and getting all the grease and surface debris off. There is no chance that you will damage a forged blade as these were not made in that manner and if applied with reasonable pressure a cloth will not remove patina.

I'd also take a rifle barrel cleaning rod or other such device and clean as much of the grease out of the saya as you can. While doing so be careful of the runners as you don't want to damage them.

                      Regards,
                      Stu
PS: As Thomas mentioned that's not a knot for a Type 95.

                          Hi
The NCO sword just arrived, sorry for the very bad photographs, the light is terrible, I'll post more if the light improves. The numbers match, I removed the grease from the blade and the knot.
                          Regards
                          Frank

The best way to remove grease or cosmoline from the blade is rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.

                                Hi Bob
I used WD40 as a lubricant then wiped the blade clean and applied a drop of Singer oil,
