Japanese Award?

Hi guys-
Attached is a photo of German paratrooper Gehart Schirmer. On the left side of his smock, he has a German Cross and another badge I cannot identify. Does anyone recognize this as a Japanese award of some type? Thanks for looking and sorry if this turns out not to be a Japanese award. Right now its just a theory as I have no idea.

Thanks Eric; so much for my theory. I thought he may have been part of an instruction team that helped train Japanese paras after Crete. I was thinking this was a merit award of somekind from Japan. Thanks for the input,

Oddly, what it looks most like to me is a breast star of the Order of Glory (Nichan Iftikhar) from French Tunisia. Maybe it is a piece of war booty he was wearing as a joke.
