Hi Paul,

The pith helmet is Showa 18 or 1943.

Just for fun I tried for the writing on the rim of the helmet. I think the last two kanji may be Akimoto preceding that is 1 and 2 and before those, no idea. Hopefully Guy or someone smarter than I will set us straight.

Usually a cut chinstrap means it was taken from the head of a dead soldier. I don't know if you've checked under the front liner pad there should be a date. The helmet is large size (dai) that's the lone white painted kanji at the back.

Yes pith helmet is dated Showa 19 (1943) and inspected by Tokyo Clothing Co. The white lettering stands for "Front" . Don't see a size mark but not sure if these pith helmets came in different sizes.

The writing inside the sunhelmet is 前 [mae, front] so the owner knows which way to put on the helmet. The issue stamp has no owner's name, so it was probably unissued. I say "probably unissued" simply because after recalling my 20 years in the military, I seldom wrote my name on tags inside hats and jackets. Dunno how strict the IJA/IJN was about naming articles of clothing.

I'm not sure the army was altogether strict about naming clothing. I've seen unnamed worn examples complete with period applied rank tabs that obviously saw service. Maybe if all the guys in your section were the same size...

I've never seen a helmet with this much writing, any idea what purpose it provided?
