Film about the Kaiten one man subs

Just came across a movie I had not heard of before. It is a 2006 movie about university students becoming Kaiten crew. This is with English subtitles, if you click the text button. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BprkULV_xg
You won't see any fancy special helmets used in this film, as the uniforms and headgear of the Kaiten crew are the flight uniform style actually known to have been worn by them in training as well as on their missions. I found it to be a rather boring movie, but the training and mission scenes were interesting. Here is an English review of the book the film is based on http://wgordon.web.wesleyan.edu/kami...yama/index.htm
Here are photos of the Kaiten interior set used in the film and now displayed in the museum at the old kaiten site. They had to build it larger than original for the benefit of the actors, who were much taller than the war-time crew. http://www006.upp.so-net.ne.jp/sumiy...hinonaiumi.htm

Are any wartime examples of Kaiten subs on museum display presently?

Aloha Nick, Thanks for the link to the movie. I thought the movie was pretty good even though it was slow, not a "Saving Private Ryan" movie that's for sure! How it must feel training for THE mission and not having the chance to..... can't imagine how it would feel.

mcmike, Pearl Harbor has one on display. Here's a picture I took.... and No that's not a ghost but I tried removing my friend from the photo.... you can go to the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park website at http://www.bowfin.org/museum/47/93-kaiten.

The sub's interior mock-up was supposedly recreated based on some material existing only in Seattle. Does Paul Allen have something in his museum?

Paul is one of the Microsoft founders, who owns the flying heritage museum outside Seattle where they fly the war planes. He is also currently in the news over his legal battle to take possesion of a Panzer IV tank from the ex-Littlefield collection. His interest in WW2 obviously extends beyond planes, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has Kaiten material.

Figure this should be a little easier!

I have looked over the one on base in Guam, and the one at the Nimitz museum in Texas

                  Itty-bitty subs

I have seen the 2-man sub at the Nimitz (a fantastic museum!). Evidently that is a true sub that could fire torpedoes, whereas the Kaiten IS a torpedo. One way trip. No deposit, no return. Goodbye mamasan.
