      Hi Mike-san,

What you have is a IJA soldier's (ID) notebook. Similar to German Wehrpass/Soldbuch.

軍隊 (Gunn-tai) - Military, Troop, Army

      手牒 (Te-chou) - Notebook

      Cheers!
      Taka

Thanks for the information. Is a common piece or rare? Never seen before.

          Regards
          Mike

Every soldier had one, so rarity is a question of what is written.

Check out Post #19 and #21 in Nick's pinned thread on these booklets. That is where your unit information will be and will also give further information of the soldier within his unit. I am very much looking forward to pics. of these pages if you have the time.

He entered the 197th Inft Regt in Sept 44 and finished basic training in November. He was a light machine gunner.

Welcome. They were assigned to the defence of the Pacific coast within Japan, so he did not see much of the war.

Could also be Yasuma instead of Anma. He would be more fortunate if it were the former, as Anma is what masseurs (typically blind) are called. If one hears "Anma-san" 99% of the Japanese will think he is about to get a massage.

Hmmmmm. .... "Cheap Place" instead of "Peaceful Place". With a given name of "One with Zen" [Zen'ichi] .... "Peaceful Place" sounds like a better family name.
