I am uncertain of the 吠 [howling] kanji because as written on the flag, it is a 犬 "dog" over a 口 "mouth." The kanji I found [Hoeh / howling] is a "mouth" 口 abreast of a 犬 "dog."

Looking at the characters on the flag next to the typed characters, I can see how the penmanship translates.

There is NO way - without your guidance - that I would have ever figured that out.

Guy and Nick - I'm sure a trite question here, but is there any way to figure out unit this soldier would have been in. Is there anything on the flag to indicate city, prefecture, and so forth?

Interesting. If you look at all the 'ta' kanji (田), they do seem to be the same. Other elements in the various kanji seem similar, too.

Yes, a bit unsettling, but a faker knows well that a sexy inscription here and there about Tokko or such would raise the value greatly for only a few strokes of his brush, yet he produced a bland boring flag. I don't know what to think of it.
