Thoughts on interesting japanese flag

Here is a picture of a Japanese flag I found while surfing the net. I have not seen a flag like this before. Has anyone else? If so, what is it? Thanks for any input, as it has me curious.

Hello Paul-
I saw this image as well. I am not familiar with the style of flag. Perhaps OFW has an illustration of something like this in his files. On the other hand, it appears that the dark object hanging from the lower edge, is a scalp; quite a Gruesome Relic!

I thought the "scalp" was damaged area to photo or negative ! My only guess is it could be a navy signal flag?

Interesting Japanese Flag

Hi Jareth-
I have still not found a flag type of this kind either. I agree with your assessment of the photograph, as the darker colored "split" near the lower border of the flag does not match the rest of the shading of the photograph.
