    Flag quesrion

sorry my camera took a crap on me so there will be no picture. in the two corners were the tie strings are the foil is starting to peel back.

so i look to see why it was peeling back and i found there is kanji between the layers of foil in red.

is this something they did ? or would this be a souvenir flag for the GI ? all comments welcome.
    thanks Bob

    Flag Question

    Hello Bob-
I wish I could say for certain that I had the answer for your question. I don't think I have ever seen this before. With regard to corner tabs, I have seen the shiny outer gold color wear off, leaving a metallic silver visible. I have seen the outer green- painted rubberized layer wear away, leaving only a plain canvas type of material behind. I have also seen an embroidered type of material loosen from its backing, leaving a plain paper under layer. On the face of it, it's practically impossible to determine whether a plain hinomaru flag is wartime or postwar (souvenir) vintage, based solely on the corner tabs. Along those lines, it's too bad that your camera died. It might have helped to read the characters.....Hope to see you at the SOS!

It is possible that old used paper was used as part of the reinforcing. This was commonly done in the wrapping of sword handles. Many times, the old, used paper can be found with kanji on it. I do not know if this is the case here since you presently can not funish a picture.

        Hello BC:
Ditto that. I have a vintage full size Japanese ribbed surface
trooping/display flag pole, where the black lacquer finish is flaking
off, revealing printed kanji underneath. IMO more evidence of this.

        *OFW*

(below) Worn flag trooping pole example from WAF t=577704.

(below-2) Worn condition pole with tripod display wear.
My pole has printed konji on back of flacked off black lacquer pieces.

(below-3) Good condition pole without display tripod caused wear.
