Japanese sword handle

Hi. I've had this thrown in a box for some years. I was wondering about it -- first (at least in the photo) the handle is sure green. an the other thing is it's missing a munuki. Any opinion on the handle?

Kabutogane dosnt belong to that tsuka.
Postwar put together.

Mekugiana is placed to high.

Thanks -- I was suspect of this when I got this thrown in a trade several years back. However the kashira (hope that's the right term -- the end cap) and the lanyard loop attached to it look good with a nice patina. Maybe later I'll take close-ups to confirm.

Hi Dennis,

I believe that the kabutogane (your "kashira") is original and as Bob says this could have been a field wrap. Also could be post war as Thomas says so I'd not dismantle nor discard anything at this point.

It looks to have one more hole for mounting a kaigunto kabutogane.
So maybe a kaigunto tsuka ,wrapped with original ito ,but done by amateur. Not using the hisigami.

Can You take a photo of the end of the tsuka where the blade goes.

I agree that the pommel is correct for a type 98 shin-gunto don't have much to say on the rest of the tsuka.
