It's a te-nugui hand-towel commemorating the Battleship Chitose's dispatch to the US and England

From 1 April-16 November 1907, Chitose made a round-the-world voyage, first stopping in the United States to attend the Jamestown Exposition of 1907, the 300th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Jamestown Colony, and continuing onwards to Europe.
Japanese Cruiser Chitose

She was decommissioned and sunk for gunnery exercises in 1931.

So this banner has no connection with WW2? I can't see why a person would take a commeritive banner to the islands.

The banner could be a J force souviner but more likely a item brought to NZ in at some other time.

It could also be a WW1 item, swapped/given by navy sailors in a forgin port?
