    Help with Navy canteen markings

Just posting this image for a friend who has just picked up this great looking Navy canteen.

Can anyone please help with a translation of the characters?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

Thanks to everyone for your help.
I assume 241 would be his unit number?

          Thanks

            Hi Russ-san,

            Very nice IJN canteen.

It's a later type but an early manufacturing.

Can tell by the large gold color cap. I have one early manufacturing in my collection and a later manufacturing as well.

Will post mine if I have time.

            Cheers!
            Taka

              Hi Taka-san

Yes, it's a very nice canteen owned by Barry (nbroadarrowz).

I'm sure we would both appreciate seeing yours when you have some time.

              Cheers!

In the case of yours, it would be more plausible that the 241 is the man number? since the unit is named after its leader Imai. Its speculation on my part. I was asking some of the same questions a couple of weeks ago. I have 2 similar canteens, both with the same unit name (Lion) but with different numbers.

I now own both of the canteens shown in the thread.

I am glad that the bottle and markings are worthy of learning.
The bottle is a souviner item and most likely brought back from
Vella Levella, Mono, or Nissian Island (or Guadalcanal) as these
are the islands that NZ served on.

                    Thanks again

An interesting feature on my bottle is the brass running loop on the shoulder strap. This loop of metal has a brass roller sleeve on each side. Most bottles I have seen pictured on the internet have fabric loops.

The rear of the fabric cover has blown out so the front is the best view. But what it does show is the dog hair insluation layer between two layers of fabric.
