Help ID & Translate this Japanese Box

Hello all!
This small box/case was brought back by a member of the 136th Infantry.
Can someone ID what might have been in the box?
Perhaps translate the Japanese on the top??

Inside the case was a paper wrap with a sticker seal. Any clues there?

Any help would be appreciated.

That box used to contain this dial gauge. It is a product from around 1939/40
