    Fake officer swords database

    Hi,

It seems that some fakes are more common than others so a kind of database could be useful.

I will sadly start this thread with one of my own
I got it as a gift but I saw the exact same one in a local gun show with a price tag of about 120$.

The handle is in wood covered by a redish leather

As you can see there is a strip of leather inserted between the handle and the tang, so it's fitting tightly but removing it further was a real PITA.

    The only marking

I'm not sure about this 2nd one. And as I'm not the proud owner I have only a few (bad) pics.

    The saya is in wood.

    That's all ATM.
    Best regards,
    Cyril

Yep it's indeed the same one!

Any opinion about the 2nd one or new submissions?

The second sword is hard to tell, could be legit, you can't tell without better pictures of the fittings and the tang of the blade. IMO

Wanna see a terrible fake, look at that:

And the big red flag telling 'Nooo I've nothing to do with Japan!':

A better pic of the handle, but not too close or people could notice something is wrong:

And the little cherry on the cake, wich make your fake gunto a real keeper in you hall of shame, the ugly moulded mon:

Sorry for kidding but, believe it or not, this sword is for sale in France for the bagatelle of $446, and the seller have 150 positiv feedbacks ... Poor France.

              Hello,

I applaud your efforts to develop a fake sword database but I think what is needed is to have each potential entry discussed on it's own thread then migrated into the database if deemed to be a fake. Otherwise this thread will continue to be a discussion thread with the accompanying clutter.

Please don't misunderstand. This is not a criticism ... just a suggestion that hopefully will assist in the development of a true database.

              Regards,
              Stu

Yep no offense and I couldn't agree more with you!
Especially as I'm a total noob in Japanese swords.

IMO the ideal would be a single discussion thread where we can argue about each sword and a tacked thread for fake swords.
The trap is that such a thread can be a very usefull tool for a counterfeiter...

                Best regards,
                Cyril

                  Hi Cyril,

As this is your idea (and a good one) how about you contact our sub forum Mod and discuss it with him explaining the set-up you wish to put in place then have him pin a data base thread that he alone can access. That way it will stay clean and as each sword is discussed in this thread (perhaps pin it too), or any other, and subsequently deemed a repro then you can notify him that photo transfers are ready to be made to the data base thread.

In addition, as those of us into swords come across old threads that have pictures of fakes in them we can each notify the Mod to have them included too.

                  Regards,
                  Stu
