    Japanese Identity Tag Question

Most of the Japanese military identity tags that I have seen have the Kanji characters on one side. What is the significance of characters on both sides?
    Thanks,
    Garry

One column of characters had a line through it on one side.

In some cases when a Japanese soldier transferred to a new unit , instead of being issued a new ID Tag they just stamped through the kanji of the old unit. Then on the other side they would stamp the new unit.
