WOW that "battleship" ink stamp is neat! Never seen that before. I'll have to check my caps! Thanks for showing.

            Hello Jareth,
I will like to have a nice Japanese U-Boot officer in addition of my German U-Boot collection, but I don't know the Japanese militaria and I have no documentation... it's not reasonable I know.
I have also the possibility to buy a named officer tunic with black stripes, is it typical (on board) or not ?
            All informations are welcome.
            Regards,
            Michel

Michel, it's not possible to prove any Jap. navy cap was aboard a submarine. Unlike the Germans the Japanese did not identify with markings or insignias. Most you'd get was owners name & then you'd have the near impossible job of trying to locate service record. Early Jap. "Donald Duck" or pork pie hats did have ribbons that would designate name of ship or sub. etc. Your peaked cap was mostly used by officers & with the dress tunic. Period photos of Jap. sub crews show them wearing white/blue field caps with & without rank stripes & occasionally pith helmets. The tunic you describe wouldn't be worn in a sub but more for ship board service & dress ocassions. Not saying a sub captain/officer wouldn't own one but it's too hot/uncomfortible in a sub to wear one.

                Michel,

Very nice Navy officer's service dress hat.

The hiragana on the inside of the hat is more than likely the original owner's last name. This type of stylized writing gives me trouble from time to time, but my best guess is that the hiragana says "Awese" when read from right to left or "Sewea" when read from left to right.

                Hope this helps.

                Eric

Thank you Jareth and Eric for your comments.

Don't hesitate if you can give me more informations.

What do you think on the tunic with black stripes, typical navy officer in sea, mission back, or not typical ?

If it's good for a nice Japanese navy officer, what price I can pay for this ?
The two are in good condition, the first one is for a Leutnant (one stripe), the second for a Kapitänleutnant (three stripes).

Last question, what is the value of the officer's cap ?
I will like to know if I have pay the good price...

                  Best regards,

                  Michel

                    Michel,

I assume you are referring to a Navy officer's winter service dress tunic (the tunic is black or Navy blue in color) because you mention the black cuff insignia stripes. If so, tunics such as these were used on board surface ships, but I not sure if they were used on submarines. (My guess is that the service dress tunics were not used on submarines.)

A Navy officer's winter service dress tunic for an ensign (has one cuff stripe with a loop) should be around $150 (without collar insignia) to $200 (with collar insignia) assuming the tunic is in good condition while a similar condition tunic for a commander (has three cuff stripes including the loop) should be around $200 (without collar insignia) to $275 (with collar insignia). Also, if the tunics are equipped ribbons and/or ribbon bars, that would be an adder as well.

Insofar as a price on the Navy officer's service dress visor hat... I would price a similar hat at $300.

                    Hope this helps.

                    Eric
