    Samurai Sword

This sword walked into a local pawn shop today with the old man who picked it up during WWII. I was lucky enough to get first shot at it. I don't know much about them. I can tell you it has the temper line on edge and signed on both sides. Blade is 26" long from tip to crossgaurd. Any info would help.

    Thanks, Cliff

I don't think the pawn shop guy knew it was signed and I didn't take the handle off until I got it home. I was floored to see it was signed on both sides and even had some writing in green paint.

I'm hoping pics are good enough for somebody to give me an idea what I have here.

                      Thanks again, Cliff

                          Hi Cliff,

That looks like a factory made Type 98 IJA Officer sword with a Company Grade Officer tassel. In that condition I'd value it at about 550 USD. Others may well view the value differently based upon availability in their part of the world.

                          Regards,
                          Stu

That stamping is a Seki arsenal stamp and if you can post clear photos of the kanji in a vertical orientation with tip of sword at top we can give you the maker name as well as the date of manufacture.

                            Regards,
                            Stu

It looks like "Masakatsu" and [Showa] 17 Year

                              眞勝
                              [incorrect!!!]

                              Masakatsu

                              [関] ---- 十七年
                              [Seki] ....Jyu-nana Nen
                              [Seki stamp] ..... 17 Year [1942]

                              --Guy

                              EDIT:

                              SADAKATSU
                              貞勝
That can't be correct, can it? The only Sadakatsu I can find is Gassan Sadakatsu.
