Here is an interesting flag that I recently acquired. This flag was given to Robert W. Chamberlin by one of his forward observers on New Georgia, Solomon Islands, in early July 1943. It apparently was taken from a wounded Japanese soldier in the jungles near the approach to Munda airfield. It was taken by Joe DeRita and given to Robert W. Chamberlin. Robert later had the entire flag translated and that translation is included here. The Japanese man who translated the flag, felt this flag was taken from a wounded soldier who was awaiting transport back to Japan when his unit was attacked, and this flag taken. The soldiers friends from his unit signed the flag with various names and prayers for a speedy recovery. Also written are phrases like: "parting with great sadness" and "until we meet again", presumably in the afterlife. This flag is a sobering reminder of the Human side to warfare. If anyone has any comments or insight they would like to add, please do so. I am also looking for any information on the two Americans connected to this flag, Joe DeRita and Robert W. Chamberlin. Thanks for any information and enjoy.
