Its a pet peeve of mine when profit gets in the way of history.
What drew me to it was the fact that the flag looks like it was signed by what looks to be a few of his former troops, and they mention locations of where this was signed. I am under the impression that this was forbidden.

Not by his troops, but most likely his dorm colleagues from what might have been an university dorm.
The interesting thing is that the dorm is named after a Westerner with a name like Avery or Apery. Kumamoto, Kyushu is also mentioned, so I thought Kumamoto University, but could not find any info on such a dormitory.

Very interesting information. The seller mentioned that one of the inscriptions mentions Luzon and a place called Aparri, in the Philippines. Is this correct?

In your learned opinion what could this mean? Someone he was with in the dorm was from the Philippines?

谷口正巳 Taniguchi Masami (maybe, as always) was an army 2nd lieutenant (farewell banner shows army type rising sun). A few signer on the flag wrote 'in Aparri (アパリ)', also a man with the word 呂宋 (=Luzon, Philippine). In some reason Lt. Taniguchi had many friends in Aparri, Luzon. So I guess the banner was used in Taniguchi's home town, and Hinomaru was presented from another group of friends.

Regarding that entire statement about Philippines/Luzon/Apari ....

I cannot find the second kanji, but can it be a written variant of 比 which is "Hi" (sounds like "hee") . Philippines, in kanji, is 比律賓 or in Chinese 菲律賓


The first kanji 在 "zai" means IN (as in "in America"). Japanese business men assigned to the US are called 在米日本企業駐在員 Zai Bei Nihon kigyō chūzai-in ["Japanese company employees stationed-IN-America"]. The American military family housing areas in Japan are 在日米軍住宅 "Zai-Nichi Beigun Jutaku" [Living Quarters for American Military in Japan.]

THEREFORE ... I think the first three kanji 在[比?] 部 Zai-Hi Bu means "in the Philippines group/section" of Japanese at 呂宋 Luzon, アパリ Apari.

So, my whole thesis rests on whether or not that second kanji is a variation of 比 or 菲

GHP, you are right. It is indeed　在比部呂宋アパリ. I was off big time on this one. What appeared to me to be　寮 for dorm was actually the　宋　from Luzon. So it must have been a department of some tropical region development company that signed. One guy signing is from Kumamoto, but that was not the scene for all this.

Not 'shopping around for better answers' ... just trying to get the full story so as to honour him properly.

As has been seen on this forum many times, people misinterpret, misread or even fail to recognise the characters written. It does not hurt to get second opinions or fresh eyes on the case....

Works for historians.... aren't we the same? Would a historian or academic just read one book to write a thesis or create a theory? No of course not..... Research is the key. Many different ideas and interpretations create an overall and an in depth knowledge of the history of these brave men and shed's new or interesting light onto there lives....

By the way, thank you for the help Nick and Guy, it's people like you that help the stories unfold and make these forums a better place.
