    odd photo

Hi guys this photo recently appeared in an article in the Armorer magazine on the type 100 sub-machine gun (model 1944).

I don't believe that the soldiers in this picture are Japanese but wanted some other opinions, my gut tells me that they are Chinese what do people think???

    regards Paul

I think these are Chinese troops under one of the pro-Japanese regimes (Nanking/Restoration/Emergency/Inner Mongolia/Manchuria) in cooperation with Japanese forces, not sure which regime specifically. I think it is Nanking Regime though.

In 1930s China helmets were considered equipment with no great importance attached to who made the helmet. Captured and scrounged helmets were put to use. Mixed batches like these were common for a while. Eventually people started to realize wearing an enemy helmet might get you shot by your own side.

All I can tell you is these aren't Japanese soldiers. Not sure who's side they were on, but the clue to look at isn't the helmets, rather the collar tabs.

                hello guys

i did some search on internet
i think the gun is a SIG Bergman MACHINEPISTOL MODEL 1920

                http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30035926

                http://www3.plala.or.jp/takihome/smg.htm

it was also posible to put the bajonet on the japense version of the bergman

in the 1920/1930 japan bought this weapens and this was also the copy to make there model 100

                greetings bruno

Thanks for the info guy's, I'm glad I wasn't loosing it.

I haven't managed to find any information on the rank badges but will keep looking.

on another note was the type 100 issued to the army? I've seen photos of navy troops with it but no army ones. that I recall.

Korea was part of the Japanese Empire from 1910 until after the war. Koreans would enlist in the Japanese military during this time and wear normal Japanese uniforms and gear.

                        Chinstraps

Interesting to note that all of the helmets appear to have the traditionally tied Japanese cloth chinstraps, including the German helmet. I presume it was shipped with a leather strap, which was replaced.

maybe they only shipped the shells out with no fittings?

The question is was helmets & type 38 rifles captured or issued? Notice the mouth piece to a bugle or other instrument in lower right.
